‘Winter Lakes’ – a landscape remembered
My memory of seeing the Central Highlands of Tasmania from the air 40 years ago has been the inspiration for this work.  The deep blue lakes set against the white snow in the morning light left an indelible impression on my mind.
I have sourced this remembered impression and my  responses  to the Tasmanian landscape in recent years  to create  ‘Winter Lakes’.
The lakes, mountains,  trees and rocks I treated as abstract design elements rather than literal interpretations of the landscape.
By rotating the square 45degrees the corners become like compass points creating  a map-like view of the landscape.  The white background evokes a desolate wintry mood.
The three blue lakes take centre stage and are each contained in crater-like basins which hint at Tasmania’s volcanic past.  Bleached skeletal like trees – survivors – in the landscape emerge from the lake and outer basin with mountains encircling the main lake. Randomly scattered rocks – a reminder of the explosive power of nature.
