Perhaps this is the first work where I've purposely chosen diverse, unrelated elements for my composition.  The original idea was inspired by a lesson on abstraction given by Western Australian artist David Hughes when I studied art in the 1970's.  He proposed we prepare 2-3 separate line drawings - I think  these may have been on transparent paper -  to  layer and  create an entirely new and unexpected image.   The drawings weren't necessarily abstract but the result certainly was.

Using the computer to prepare 'the tie that binds',  instead of line drawings,  I  selected shapes,  forms, textures and surface treatments all sourced from my now extensive library of components.   The challenge was to select ones which bore no resemblance to each other - perhaps even to be contrary - then to compose an entirely new work from this varied collection -  to find a relationship - to bind them together.
